DESPITE, or perhaps in spite of the pandemic gripping the world, luxury and high performance car brands, like Porsche and Lamborghini, have had a bumper 2021, setting new sales records across the globe.
In its strongest result in the company’s history, Porsche delivered 301,915 vehicles to customers worldwide, an increase of 11 per cent year on year. Every single global sales region contributed too, with the biggest boost on the American continent, and in China.
“Demand remains high and our order books are looking very robust, so we start 2022 full of momentum and confidence in all regions of the world,” Porsche executive board member Detlev von Platen said.

The models with the highest demand were again the brand’s SUVs, led by the Macan, with 88,362 customers. The Cayenne followed in second place with 83,071 vehicles. The all-electric Porsche Taycan sold a total of 41,296 units, with the iconic 911 delivered to 38,464.
The Panamera saw 30,220 deliveries, and the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman wound up in 20,502 driveways. Locally, there were 4,428 Porsche cars handed over to new owners in 2021, with the stand out model being the Macan, Cayenne Coupe and Wagon, and the 911.
“The overall result is very promising and shows the strategy to further electrify our fleet is working and is in line with demand and the preferences of our customers,” von Platen added.
For Lamborghini, a remarkable 8,405 cars were delivered worldwide, making it the company’s best year ever. Sales were up by 13 per cent on 2020 due, the result of a targeted and monitored growth strategy.
“This record has provided confirmation of four factors for us: the solidity of our strategic plan, our brand’s outstanding international reputation, the competence and passion of our people and the exceptional professionalism and dynamism shown by our 173 dealers in 52 markets, who have continued to invest alongside us at a challenging, uncertain time,” Lamborghini chairman and CEO Stephen Wilkelmann said.
In a year where the company launched the Huracán STO, Aventador Ultimae, and the Countach LPI 800-4, it was the Urus super SUV that stood out as the star performer, ahead of the V10-powered Huracán and the V12 Aventador.
The strongest markets were the USA, China, Germany and the United Kingdom. 2022 is expected to be another boom year for the Italian car maker, with Lamborghini planning to unveil four new products over the next 12 months.
“In 2022 we’ll be doing our utmost to consolidate the current performance and get ready for the arrival of our future hybrid range from 2023 onwards,” Winkelmann added.
Lamborghini plans to launch its first hybrid model in 2023, and electrify its entire range by the end of 2024. A fourth, fully electric model, will be added to their line-up in the second half of the decade.
